"The following is an attempt to decipher the sayings of Jesus in the Gospel of Thomas by means of utilizing the Thoth Tarot deck designed by occultist Aleister Crowley. I originally tried this in 2006. It is said that he who deciphers the meaning of the sayings in this Gospel “will not taste death.” I utilized the Tarot as a means to exegesis, I drew a card for each one of the sayings and noted the result. The Gospel is in bold italics, input from the Thoth Tarot in [square brackets], my comments in standard script." - Miguel Angel Torres

The Gospel of Thomas
Related to saying number 101. The synthesis of two principles, physical and metaphysical.
The Gospel of Thomas
“These are the secret sayings that the living Jesus spoke and Didymos Judas Thomas recorded.”
There is a dispute among scholars as to whether Thomas is a Gnostic gospel. A majority affirms this to be true because of the gospel's emphasis on these being “secret sayings” of an esoteric nature; but a dissenting minority maintains that the gospel is not Gnostic due to the fact that it was probably written prior to the advent of second century Gnosticism. There is no evidence that Thomas the Apostle wrote this gospel.
“1. And he said, "Whoever discovers the interpretation of these sayings will not taste death."”
[Thoth Tarot: Thought has gone through every possible stage and has reached an intellectual dead end.]
These sayings are the key to transcend that state. “Death” might mean intellectual and spiritual stagnation. To decipher these sayings is to go beyond predetermined limits. The Tarot as a means to exegesis might yield different results to different persons.
“2. Jesus said, "Those who seek should not stop seeking until they find. When they find, they will be disturbed. When they are disturbed, they will marvel, and will reign over all. And after they have reigned they will rest."”
Justice cannot be attained in the intellectual world. The truth of a form is found in its anti-thesis. This is the primal duality. This insight suggests the Hegelian Dialectic.
“3. Jesus said, "If your leaders say to you, 'Look, the Father's kingdom is in the sky,' then the birds of the sky will precede you. If they say to you, 'It is in the sea,' then the fish will precede you. Rather, the [Father's] kingdom is within you and it is outside you. When you know yourselves, then you will be known, and you will understand that you are children of the living Father. But if you do not know yourselves, then you live in poverty, and you are the poverty."”
[Thoth Tarot: The idea of love comes to fruition. The reception of the feeling “to be loved by somebody else” and thus returning a corresponding feeling; it is joy as well as healing from the inside.]
Truth is Justice. Justice is Love. Know Thyself. The maxim of the Western esoteric tradition.
“4. Jesus said, "The person old in days won't hesitate to ask a little child seven days old about the place of life, and that person will live. For many of the first will be last, and will become a single one."”

“5. Jesus said, "Know what is in front of your face, and what is hidden from you will be disclosed to you. For there is nothing hidden that will not be revealed.[And there is nothing buried that will not be raised."”
[Thoth Tarot: Virtue emerges when the idea of will and dominion (of Justice) becomes interpreted in character. Virtue is a dynamic.]
The Truth will be revealed to those who achieve a spiritual and intellectual transformation. Awareness and perception of The Truth will come as a byproduct of achieving the said transformation of self. To know oneself is the first step.
“6. His disciples asked him and said to him, "Do you want us to fast? How should we pray? Should we give to charity? What diet should we observe?" Jesus said, "Don't lie, and don't do what you hate, because all things are disclosed before heaven. After all, there is nothing hidden that will not be revealed, and there is nothing covered up that will remain undisclosed."”
[Thoth Tarot: Ace of Discs. The old conception of earth (matter) as passive, immobile, 'dead' or 'evil' has to go. There is no indivisible 'Particle of Dalton'. The earth (matter) is a whirling sphere. The root of matter manifests itself as a form of energy whose physical aspect is measurable.]
“7. Jesus said, "Lucky is the lion that the human will eat, so that the lion becomes human. And foul is the human that the lion will eat, and the lion still will become human."”
[Thoth Tarot: The Lord of Dominion. Represents the energy of fire in its best and brightest form. Action by deliberate plan.]
Blessed is the man who becomes an archangel when possessed by an archangel.
“8. And He said, "The Kingdom is like a wise fisherman who cast his net into the sea and drew it up from the sea full of little fish. Among them the wise fisherman discovered a fine large fish. He threw all the little fish back into the sea, and easily chose the large fish. Whoever has ears to hear, let him hear."”
[Thoth Tarot: Love. The Lord of Love, which performs a similar office for water. Harmony; Love and mutual understanding synthesized.]
“9. Jesus said, "Look, the sower went out, took a handful (of seeds), and scattered (them). Some fell on the road, and the birds came and gathered them. Others fell on rock, and they didn't take root in the soil and didn't produce heads of grain. Others fell on thorns, and they choked the seeds and worms ate them. And others fell on good soil, and it produced a good crop: it yielded sixty per measure and one hundred twenty per measure."”

Associated with The Ram, Aries/Ares. Mars.
“10. Jesus said, "I have cast fire upon the world, and look, I'm guarding it until it blazes."”
[Thoth Tarot: The Oracle of the Gods is the child voice of Love in thine own Soul; hear thou it. Heed not the siren voice of sense, or the phantom voice of reason, rest in simplicity and listen to the silence.]
“11. Jesus said, "This heaven will pass away, and the one above it will pass away. The dead are not alive, and the living will not die. During the days when you ate what is dead, you made it come alive. When you are in the light, what will you do? On the day when you were one, you became two. But when you become two, what will you do?"
[Thoth Tarot: The economic system has broken down, there is no balance between the social orders. There is no sense in looking back or preserving former conditions.]

[Thoth Tarot: Let the illusion of the World pass over thee, unheeded, as thou goest from midnight to morning. The darkest hour before dawn.]
“13. Jesus said to his disciples, "Compare me to something and tell me what I am like." Simon Peter said to him, "You are like a just messenger." (Another translation: Simon Peter said to him, "You are like a righteous Angel'') Matthew said to him, "You are like a wise philosopher." Thomas said to him, "Teacher, my mouth is utterly unable to say what you are like." Jesus said, "I am not your teacher. (Another translation: I am not your master) Because you have drunk, you have become intoxicated from the bubbling spring that I have tended." And he took him, and withdrew, and spoke three sayings to him. When Thomas came back to his friends they asked him, "What did Jesus say to you?" Thomas said to them, "If I tell you one of the sayings he spoke to me, you will pick up rocks and stone me, and fire will come from the rocks and devour you."”

[Thoth Tarot: Ace of Pentacles. Associated with Science. Before intelligence can act to turn away from the idea of division and quarrel; the division and the quarrel must exist. New and uncommon ideas.]
“17. Jesus said, "I will give you what no eye has seen, what no ear has heard, what no hand has touched, what has not arisen in the human heart."”

If you become my disciples and pay attention to my sayings, these stones will serve you (Another translation: These stones will minister to you). They take off their clothes in front of them in order to give it back to them, and they return their field to them. For this reason I say, if the owners of a house know that a thief is coming, they will be on guard before the thief arrives and will not let the thief break into their house (Another translation: their domain) and steal their possessions (Another translation: to carry away his goods). As for you, then, be on guard against the world. Prepare yourselves with great strength, so the robbers can't find a way to get to you, for the trouble you expect will come. They said to him, "Then shall we enter the Father's kingdom as babies?"Jesus said to them, "When you make the two into one, and when you make the inner like the outer and the outer like the inner, and the upper like the lower, and when you make male and female into a single one, so that the male will not be male nor the female be female, when you make eyes in place of an eye, a hand in place of a hand, a foot in place of a foot, an image in place of an image, then you will enter the kingdom."”
[Thoth Tarot: Related to saying number 10. (1) Access to The Kingdom is derived from a thought. In the case of Buddha (Yoga); the thought that negates itself is Truth. In Western dialectics, the negation of the negation produces the synthesis. (2) So what is antagonism? “Change is Stability”, continuous activity. Steady transformation. No “solidity”, no “moments”, only eternal movement down to the quantum level. No “indivisible particles”. Ceasing to be and becoming as an eternal cycle of existence.]
“Above” negates “below” and “below” negates “above”; when they become like each other they become a synthesis.

[Thoth Tarot: The secret to peace. The ideas of passibity, immobility, solidity and that matter is “evil” and false.]
I do not agree with the Gnostic that matter is inherently evil. Matter (the natural universe) is what it is.
